This morning we got up around 8:30 a.m. and headed to South Haven, Michigan to see some another lighthouse! It was a great morning to walk out to the lighthouse. We then drove through Saugatuck, Michigan. I wanted to climb the stairs that lead to the top of Mount Baldhead (a huge dune) but my parents said they were too tired! In their defense, there are a LOT of stairs! We finished off our time in Saugatuck by going to Oval Beach and walking around.
After Saugatuck, we drove up to Holland! No, not the country in Europe, the town in Michigan that hosts the annual Tulip Time Festival! I didn’t plan our trip with the festival, we just happened to be going to Michigan the same week. There were tulips EVERYWHERE!! It was so pretty! The lady at the information center gave us a map that showed what types of tulips were planted where. After looking at the tulips, we walked to the main street area and headed into a shop called the Holland Clock Company. There were so many interesting clocks to admire! My mom ended up buying a Peanuts cuckoo clock. We then located a spot on the sidewalk to sit and watch the parade. The theme for the day that we were there was Children’s Day. So we watched a group of high schoolers perform a traditional Dutch dance. It was so cool to see the children get so excited about the culture.
After the parade, it was time for lunch. We ended up going to the New Holland Brewing Company. The food was amazing and my mom and I split a flight of local ciders, which were equally as amazing! After lunch, we went back to our car so that we could drive to Tunnel Park. Along the way, we passed the Dutch Village which is a tourist attraction based on Dutch culture. Unfortunately, we didn’t end up going to it or the authentic Dutch windmill nearby. Tunnel Park was beautiful! As the name suggests, it is a tunnel built into the dune so that you don’t have to walk over the dune. We then drove down to the Holland State Park to see Big Red (the lighthouse)!! After wandering around the beach for a little, we decided to head back to Benton Harbor to relax at our hotel before dinner.
I really wanted to see the sunset over Lake Michigan, so we went to the Lakehouse Restaurant and Bar for dinner. The food was delicious and the views were incredible! The sun setting over Lake Michigan was a beautiful way to end our time in Michigan!

This morning, we left our hotel in Michigan around 8:30 a.m. and began our journey back to good ol’ New Concord, Ohio. Along the way, we passed through South Bend and Fort Wayne, Indiana and Columbus, Ohio. We got back to New Concord around 3:30 p.m. Overall, it was a fantastic trip and I’m glad my parents and I got the chance to go!
